The Rodriguez Family

The Rodriguez Family: Pioneers of Bolivian Specialty Coffee

Over recent years, we've partnered with the Rodriguez family, who have revolutionized Bolivian coffee production. They've worked tirelessly to enhance both the quality and market for Bolivian specialty coffee, assisting hundreds of local farmers to unlock the full potential of their lands. Las Alasitas, one of their standout farms, exemplifies their commitment to excellence.

Discovering Las Alasitas Farm

Discovering Las Alasitas

Nestled in the colony of Bolinda, just outside of Caranavi, Las Alasitas thrives in a stunning mountain valley. Founded 52 years ago as ‘Bolivia Linda’ (Beautiful Bolivia), Bolinda has grown into one of the area's major settlements. The farm itself, accessed via winding mountain roads, is a sight to behold—its layout resembles a fingerprint from above, making it a true coffee lover's paradise.

Coffee Growing in Bolivia

Coffee Growing in Bolivia: Challenges and Triumphs

Bolivia offers some of the highest coffee-growing altitudes in the world, contributing to the unique qualities of its coffee. The high altitude means cherries ripen slowly, requiring farmers to make multiple harvest passes to pick only the ripest cherries. This slow maturation, coupled with challenges like poor infrastructure, climate change, and coffee leaf rust (roya), has impacted production. However, the vision and dedication of Pedro, Daniela, and Pedro Pablo Rodriguez of Agricafe bring hope. They have implemented a dual strategy: the Sol de la Mañana mentoring program, which equips small producers with the knowledge and skills to improve their farms, and the establishment of their own farms under the "Fincas Los Rodríguez" banner. These model farms, scattered across La Paz and Santa Cruz, showcase sustainable, profitable practices for local farmers.

The Gesha Variety

Gesha, named after a town in Ethiopia, is renowned for its exquisite cup profile, characterised by floral notes and balanced acidity. Though low-yielding and requiring ideal conditions, Gesha's introduction to Panama in the 1960s by Francisco "Pachi" Serracin marked the beginning of its global journey. Today, Gesha commands premium prices, celebrated for its aromatic complexity and exceptional quality.

The Story Behind the name ‘Alasitas’

"Alasitas," meaning "Buy Me" in Aymara, is inspired by a local festival dedicated to desires and the Andean god of abundance. During this festival, people buy miniature versions of items they wish to receive in the coming year, hoping the gods will turn these dreams into reality. These miniatures are blessed by a Yatiri (spiritual leader) and offered to Ekeko, the god of abundance, symbolising the community's hope and aspirations.
